Construction of Chennai Port–Maduravoyal Elevated Corridor Accelerates, Set for 2027 Deadline

Construction of the long-pending Chennai Port–Maduravoyal elevated corridor has picked up pace, with authorities now aiming to complete the project by November 2027. The project is expected to improve cargo evacuation from Chennai Port and ease freight congestion across the city.

The 20.5-km, four-lane elevated expressway, being developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), is designed to facilitate smooth movement of container traffic between Chennai Port and the outer highway network, thereby strengthening export-import logistics. Initially conceptualised over a decade ago, the project has faced delays due to legal challenges, environmental issues, and design changes. It has now been revived following revised plans and fresh clearances.

Once operational, the corridor is expected to divert heavy goods vehicles away from congested city roads, especially in port-adjacent areas, reducing traffic pressure and improving urban mobility. It will also enhance connectivity to industrial hubs and hinterland markets in Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states, leading to faster logistics turnaround times.

To ensure timely completion, authorities are executing the project through parallel construction packages, strengthened monitoring systems, and ongoing work on utility shifting and drainage infrastructure.
