₹8,707 Crore Thiruvananthapuram Airport Expansion Clears Key Environmental Milestone

The proposed ₹8,707 crore expansion of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in Kerala has achieved an important regulatory milestone, strengthening prospects for one of southern India’s major upcoming airport infrastructure developments.

Kerala’s State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC) has recommended integrated Environmental Clearance (EC) and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance for the proposed Terminal 2 expansion. The recommendation represents a significant step in the environmental approval process, although final clearance from the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) is still required. The large-scale expansion is aimed at substantially increasing the airport’s passenger-handling capability, with the upgraded infrastructure expected to support approximately 27 million passengers annually.

The development is expected to involve significant investment in terminal infrastructure, passenger-processing systems, baggage-handling systems, electrical and mechanical works, HVAC, airport security systems, IT and communications, utilities, airside infrastructure, commercial facilities and associated civil works.The SEAC recommendation is particularly important from a project-intelligence perspective because environmental and CRZ approvals can precede major construction, EPC and procurement activity.

Once the remaining statutory approvals are secured, the project could generate substantial opportunities for EPC contractors, airport-system suppliers, MEP contractors, consultants and specialist infrastructure companies.
