New Delhi | October 22, 2026
In a major push to strengthen Delhi’s urban infrastructure and rejuvenate the Yamuna River, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated and laid foundation stones for 43 Delhi Jal Board (DJB) projects involving a combined investment of ₹8,941.22 crore on Thursday.
The initiative comprises 10 projects worth ₹2,827.11 crore inaugurated and 33 projects valued at ₹6,114.11 crore for which foundation stones were laid. The investments focus on expanding sewage treatment capacity, modernising water supply systems, improving drainage infrastructure and preventing untreated wastewater from entering the Yamuna.
Among the major developments is a 124-million-gallon-per-day (MGD) sewage treatment plant at Okhla, estimated at ₹1,161 crore. Additionally, eight existing sewage treatment plants will undergo upgrades costing ₹1,041 crore, increasing their combined treatment capacity from 78.2 MGD to 140.8 MGD.
The programme also includes 29 decentralised sewage treatment plants and pumping stations across Outer Delhi, involving investments of ₹3,113.67 crore. These facilities will serve 358 unauthorised colonies and 113 villages, significantly strengthening wastewater management.
Another key component is the construction of a 1,034-kilometre sewer network costing approximately ₹1,691 crore. A new 477-million-litre-per-day water treatment facility at Chandrawal, estimated at ₹298.3 crore, will further enhance drinking water infrastructure.
The projects are expected to generate substantial opportunities for engineering, construction, equipment supply and infrastructure contractors while supporting Delhi’s long-term environmental sustainability, sanitation improvements and urban water security.
The investment represents a significant step towards modernising the capital’s essential water infrastructure.
