Egypt Signs US$650 Million Agreement for 1 GW Dandara Solar Project with Battery Storage
Egypt has signed preliminary financing agreements for the US$650 million Dandara Solar Project in Nagaa Hammadi, Qena Governorate, marking a major step in expanding renewable energy infrastructure.
Developed by Norway-based Scatec, the project will feature 1,000 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity alongside a 200 MWh battery energy storage system.
The financing agreement involves the European Investment Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and African Development Bank, with the National Bank of Egypt also participating in the project company.
Development will proceed in two phases, each comprising 500 MW of solar capacity and 100 MWh of battery storage.
The facility is expected to supply approximately one-third of Egypt Aluminium Company's electricity requirements, reducing industrial carbon emissions and supporting sustainable aluminium production.
Additional agreements cover national grid connectivity and project equity participation. The investment supports Egypt's renewable energy expansion strategy while strengthening industrial competitiveness and reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.
