Assam Unveils ₹50,000 Crore Development Push, With Solar and Battery Project at Its Core

The Assam government has approved the ₹50,000 crore “Viksit Assam” development programme, a broad investment initiative intended to strengthen the state’s renewable-energy capacity, healthcare system and public infrastructure.

A confirmed component of the programme is an integrated clean-energy project in Goalpara district. It will combine a 30 MW solar power plant with a 25 MW battery-energy-storage system capable of storing 100 MWh of electricity. The facility is planned for the Rakhyasini Jungle Block under the Matia Revenue Circle.

Pairing solar generation with battery storage should allow electricity produced during sunny periods to be retained and supplied when demand is higher or solar output declines. The project could consequently improve grid reliability while supporting Assam’s transition toward lower-carbon sources of electricity.

The wider Viksit Assam programme also includes investment in healthcare and other public-development projects. Details concerning the allocation of funding among sectors, implementation schedules and individual contractors are expected to determine its eventual economic effect.

Importantly, the announced ₹50,000 crore represents the value of the overall development programme. It should not be interpreted as the investment assigned exclusively to the Goalpara solar and battery facility; a separate cost for that energy project has not yet been disclosed.

If implemented effectively, the programme could generate construction and operational employment, expand essential services and establish Assam as a growing destination for renewable-energy and infrastructure investment in northeastern India. The next milestones will be detailed budget allocations, project tenders, environmental approvals and construction timelines.
