The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sanctioned Rs. 331 crore for the development of multi-level elevated corridors near the upcoming Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Panjapur in Trichy city. The project includes a new flyover that aims to ensure smooth vehicular flow on the Trichy-Madurai National Highway (NH), connecting southern districts with Trichy and Chennai.
Additionally, a separate but shorter flyover has been given the green light on the Thanjavur-Karur Semi-ring Road, intersecting the Trichy-Madurai NH at Panjapur. Both flyovers will operate simultaneously at two different levels, enhancing the overall traffic management system.
With various infrastructure developments planned in Panjapur by Trichy Corporation, such as a new bus terminus, truck terminal, Tidel Park, regional Olympic training academy, and a wholesale vegetable market, the NHAI Trichy Project Implementation Unit (PIU) underscores the significance of these flyovers in preventing traffic bottlenecks.
The NHAI will be constructing a 3km long flyover on Trichy-Madurai NH, marking it as the longest on a highway passing through Trichy city. This four-lane elevated structure, stretching from the Koraiyar River bridge to Vinayaga Nagar in Panjapur, will enable vehicles bound for Madurai and Chennai to bypass the anticipated increase in traffic around the new bus terminus and vegetable market.
Furthermore, a separate 750-meter-long flyover has been approved on the Thanjavur-Karur Semi-ring Road, ensuring seamless traffic movement between Jeeyapuram on Karur NH and Thuvakudi on Thanjavur NH. The intersection will see the Trichy-Madurai NH flyover operating on the first level, while the shorter flyover will be constructed at a higher elevation.
The NHAI emphasizes that Trichy Corporation has provided adequate land for the improvement work, with a focus on isolating traffic on the Trichy-Madurai highway without disrupting local traffic. The designs of the new flyovers have incorporated the layout of the new bus terminus.
The project includes the development of eight-lane carriageways to facilitate a hassle-free approach to the new bus terminus. Additionally, two subways will be constructed for pedestrians, ensuring safe crossing of the highway to reach the IBT and wholesale vegetable market.
These new flyovers are expected to eliminate two identified black spots near Panjapur. The NHAI has already issued a tender, and the project is set to commence around April 2024, with a completion deadline of 18 months, according to a senior NHAI official.
