GMDA Greenlights Long-Delayed 100 MLD Sewage Plant for Dwarka Expressway.
After a three-year delay, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is finally moving forward with a proposed 100 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) in Sector 107. A consultant has been hired to prepare the detailed project report (DPR), which is expected within the next two to three months.
The STP, which was announced in May 2022 by the former Chief Minister, is designed to serve sectors along the Dwarka Expressway.
The project faced significant delays over land acquisition. The GMDA had planned to acquire 49.9 acres of land in Daultabad from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) for ₹179.75 crore. However, a decision in August 2023 to either lease the land or hand it over for free caused months of administrative holdups. The land was finally handed over to the GMDA in May after a payment of ₹50 crore was made to the MCG in January.
The 100 MLD plant is the first phase of a larger plan for a 350 MLD STP in Sector 107, which will eventually treat sewage from sectors 81 to 115.
Officials stated that the plant will prevent the discharge of untreated waste into drains and water bodies. "A consultant has been engaged who will outline the plan's design, technical aspects and costs. We plan to float tenders once the DPR is approved," a GMDA official said.
The delay has had serious consequences for residents. Many housing societies lack a complete sewerage network and are forced to dispose of wastewater through private tankers or by dumping it in vacant plots. Untreated wastewater from nearby colonies has also been accumulating in open spaces, leading to foul odors, mosquito breeding, and significant health risks. This untreated discharge is also contaminating groundwater and flowing into storm drains connected to the Najafgarh drain.
