Deputy CM to Inaugurate ROB at Kandikal Gate on August 31.

The long-pending road overbridge (RoB) at Kandikal Gate in Uppuguda in the old city will be opened to vehicular traffic from August 31. It will be inaugurated by deputy chief minister Mahmood Ali.

The RoB will provide relief to motorists from frequent closure of the railway level crossing. The peak-hour traffic at Kandikal Gate used to be 1,500 passenger car unit (PCU).

The new RoB will ease the congestion on the Charminar-Falaknuma-Chandranyangutta Road and reduce the travelling distance and time. It will also provide vital connectivity between Hyderabad and Shamshabad International Airport via Barkas. For the past few months only two-wheelers have been being allowed to ply on the RoB.

GHMC officials told Express that the Kandikal Gate RoB was built at a cost of Rs 23 crore. The work began in June 2012. Its total length is 837.45 metres and has a carriageway width of 7 metres on either side and the service roads with a width of 4.50 metres on either side.

The location of religious structures on the approaches to the bridge proved a challenge to the GHMC. More than 75 properties were acquired to facilitate construction of the RoB. The stiff resistance from property owners to acquisition delayed the project. Besides, there was inordinate delay in shifting electrical poles, water and sewerage lines, GHMC officials explained.
