Coal India Plans ₹1,900-Crore Investment to Boost R&D by FY30.

State-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) has stepped up its research and development (R&D) initiatives and plans to invest around ₹1,900 crore by 2029-30 to accelerate technology development and respond to the changing energy landscape.

The coal major said its R&D transformation gained momentum in FY24-25 with the establishment of the National Centre for Coal and Energy Research (NaCCER), a hub-and-spoke model research centre. Since then, CIL has shifted its focus from proof-of-concept studies to prototype development aligned with Technology Readiness Level (TRL)-4 and above.

The company said the enhanced R&D focus is aimed at driving technological transformation and supporting future growth across the coal and energy sectors.

“We intend to shift R&D to a higher orbit to drive the company’s future growth and technological transformation,” a senior CIL official said.

The investment plan comes as Coal India seeks to develop innovative solutions and strengthen its capabilities amid evolving energy requirements and the transition towards more efficient and sustainable technologies.
