Andhra Pradesh Plans Major Boost to Shipbuilding Sector in Machilipatnam

Andhra Pradesh, with one of India’s longest coastlines spanning 1,053 km, is set to strengthen its maritime and industrial capabilities with a new shipbuilding and ship repair facility at Machilipatnam. The initiative is part of the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board’s (APMB) broader vision to unlock the state’s coastal and maritime potential through sustainable, investor-led port and port-based industrial development.

The APMB will soon issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) to establish a modern, investor-owned facility under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model. The approach aims to combine private sector efficiency with long-term public oversight, attracting experienced global and domestic players with proven technical and financial expertise.

“The project is a key component of our strategy to develop Andhra Pradesh’s maritime infrastructure while fostering industrial growth along the coast,” said Special Chief Secretary MT Krishna Babu.

Officials said the facility is expected to enhance the state’s shipbuilding and repair capabilities, promote investment, and create new employment opportunities, further solidifying Andhra Pradesh’s position as a strategic hub on India’s eastern coast.
