Gujarat Approves 1.99 Lakh Hectares for Green Hydrogen Park: Governor Devvrat.

Gujarat has given “in-principle” approval for nearly 1.99 lakh hectares of land to develop a renewable energy park dedicated to green hydrogen production, Governor Acharya Devvrat announced while addressing the Gujarat Legislative Assembly recently.

The state aims to establish itself as India’s green hydrogen hub, leveraging its vast renewable energy potential, well-developed port infrastructure, and LNG pipeline network. The Gujarat government has set a production target of 30 lakh metric tons of green hydrogen per year.

To support this goal, the state has introduced a policy for leasing unused government land for green hydrogen production using solar, wind, and hybrid energy sources. At the 2024 Vibrant Gujarat Summit, the government signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth over ₹3 lakh crore in the green hydrogen sector.

“The production of green hydrogen will require about 100 GW of power from renewable sources. To facilitate this, Gujarat has approved nearly 1.99 lakh hectares of land for setting up a renewable energy park,” Devvrat stated. The state is also working on expanding its Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) and the Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO) network to boost electricity generation.

Gujarat currently has the highest installed electricity generation capacity in the country at 57,664 MW, including 31,483 MW from renewable sources—12,474 MW from wind and 16,796 MW from solar. Additionally, the state is developing renewable energy parks with an extra 37,000 MW capacity.
