54 skywalks proposed in Bengaluru.
Crossing roads in the city, especially major junctions, has become a nightmare for pedestrians. With the number of pedestrians killed in road accidents increasing, the city is in dire need of dedicated pedestrian facilities.
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), after studying the feasibility for construction of pedestrian skywalks in 120 locations across the city, has now chosen 54 junctions. Tenders have already been floated for the construction of skywalks at these junctions on a public private partnership (PPP) basis.
As per the proposal, the skywalks will be managed on Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis by private investors, who will pay ground rent to the BBMP. The investors will be able earn revenue by renting out space on the skywalks for advertisements.
According to senior BBMP officials, the feasibility study was conducted over two years ago and took into account the pedestrian volume count at these junctions.
