₹1,800 Crore Proposal to Link Ahmedabad Airport with Metro Sent for Central Approval.
A new metro route connecting Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport with Ahmedabad’s metro network is in the pipeline, with a detailed ₹1,800 crore proposal sent to the central government for approval. The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), which oversees the Ahmedabad and Surat metro projects, has developed a Detailed Project Report (DPR) outlining a six-kilometer route with four metro stations.
The route will include three elevated stations and one underground station at the airport, designed to preserve the airport’s skyline. "To minimize impact on the airport’s aesthetics, around one kilometer near the airport will be constructed underground," a senior GMRC official said. The new line will extend from Motera, near the Narendra Modi Stadium, directly to the airport via Koteshwar and Koba.
Ahmedabad Metro’s Phase-1, completed at a cost of ₹12,700 crore, has been operational since September 2022, with the exception of a 1.4-kilometer segment still under construction. Phase-II of the metro, costing ₹5,384 crore, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2024. Currently, 21 of the 28 kilometers in Phase-II are operational, with the remaining sections under construction.
