Work on ITO skywalk to start next month.

The Public Works Department (PWD) is in the process of initiating the construction of the Capital's longest pedestrian foot over-bridge, the ITO skywalk, by next month.

A senior government official said the skywalk, which will connect Tilak Marg, Sikandra Road, Mathura Road and Bahadurshah Zafar Marg with the ITO metro station and the Delhi High Court, will be constructed faster and at a significantly cheaper cost than initially thought.

The skywalk will enhance the safety of pedestrians crossing the busy ITO intersection, which is among the most congested in the city.

“The PWD had floated tenders for the construction of the skywalk in July following which it received three bids of which two passed the stage of technical evaluation and are being considered,” said the official.

“The department will decide which agency to engage for construction in the coming three weeks after which work will commence. It is expected to be completed within six months,” the official said, adding that clearances from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the Indian Railways and the New Delhi Municipal Council were being pursued and expected to be successfully obtained in the meantime.

The official said that due to a recent directive by the NITI Aayog, which allows for bidders to suggest modifications in designs, the cost of the project had seen a reduction of around ₹17 crore.

“The initial cost of the project was ₹59 crore. The estimate was recast to ₹44 crore, which has now been reduced to ₹42 crore due to design modifications suggested by the bidders,” the official said.
