Vizhinjam Port Secures Environmental Clearance for Phase II & III Expansion.
The Vizhinjam International deep-water multi-purpose seaport has received environmental clearance for the development of its Phase II and III expansions. Kerala Port Minister V.N. Vasavan confirmed that the clearance was granted by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.
The expansion plan includes extending the Phase I container terminal by an additional 1,200 meters, developing a container storage yard and supporting infrastructure, extending the main breakwater by 900 meters, constructing 1,220 meters of multi-purpose berths, and adding a 250-meter liquid berth along the breakwater. The plan also includes developing a liquid cargo storage facility, reclaiming 77.17 hectares of land, and dredging 7.20 cubic meters.
With the environmental clearance secured, all phases of the Vizhinjam port project are expected to be completed ahead of schedule, generating substantial revenue for the state government. The total investment in the project is expected to reach ₹10,000 crore, positioning Vizhinjam as a key player in the global shipping sector.
The development of Phases II and III is projected to bring significant economic benefits, including increased revenue for both the Central and State governments through GST and job creation. The port's enhanced capacity will provide traders with a competitive edge by lowering logistics costs and accommodating larger mother vessels directly.
The Vizhinjam port expansion is expected to strengthen India’s supply chain capabilities, offering a cost-effective solution for the export-import (Exim) trade while unlocking new business opportunities through induced developments.
