Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath Inaugurates Torrent Group's Green Hydrogen Plant in Gorakhpur.

The Torrent Group recently inaugurated Uttar Pradesh's first green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur. The project, a joint effort between Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, is the country's largest green hydrogen and natural gas blending initiative within the City Gas Distribution (CGD) sector.

The plant, developed by Torrent Power, has an annual production capacity of 72 tonnes. The green hydrogen produced will be blended with natural gas in the existing City Gas Distribution network in Gorakhpur, with a concentration of up to 2%. This blended gas will then be supplied to domestic households, CNG stations, and industries, reducing their carbon footprint.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who inaugurated the plant, praised the initiative as a crucial step towards the National Green Hydrogen Mission 2030. "With the inauguration of this plant, green hydrogen has become a part of the life of common people as it will directly reach their kitchens and vehicles," he stated. He added that the state has set a target of 1 million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen production and has implemented a specific policy to support investments in the sector.

Jinal Mehta, Director of the Torrent Group, highlighted the project's significance, calling it a "milestone" in the company's commitment to India's energy transition. "Blending Green Hydrogen into Gorakhpur's gas grid is a step in achieving a practical, scalable pathway to the net-zero target of the country," he said.

Torrent Gas, which holds the authorization to provide CNG and PNG in the Gorakhpur, Sant Kabirnagar, and Kushinagar districts, currently operates 32 CNG stations and supplies gas to over 12,000 domestic households and 73 industries. The company plans to significantly expand its gas distribution infrastructure in the region.
