Uddhav lays foundation of Britannia storm water pumping station.

After a delay of eight years, the BMC has finally begun the construction of the Britannia storm water pumping station at Reay Road with Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray laying the foundation stone recently. The 115.83-crore pumping station is likely to be ready in 18 months, excluding monsoon months, said civic officials.

Once operational, the pumping station will aid in mitigating water-logging observed in flood-prone areas of Hindmata area, Abhuyadaya Nagar, Petit Lane, Jijibhoy lane, Madkebua chowk, Kalachowki, Lalbaug and areas surrounding Reay Road and Byculla.

'Areas like Hindmata Chowk get flooded every monsoon. Once the pumping station is commissioned, we no longer will have to face flooding in the areas,' said S V R Srinivas, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs).

The pumping station is a part of the much-delayed Brihanmumbai Storm Water Drain (Brimstowad) project. According to civic officials, the construction of the station had been delayed for several years for want of NOCs from the Mumbai Port Trust and Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA).
