Titagarh Rail Systems Delivers First Driverless Trainset for Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line..
Titagarh Rail Systems, a Kolkata-based rolling stock manufacturer, delivered its first driverless trainset to the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation’s Yellow Line recently. The trainset, fully automated and entirely manufactured in India, will operate on the crucial 18-km stretch of the Yellow Line.
This milestone reinforces Titagarh’s position as a leading manufacturer of advanced passenger rolling stock and highlights India’s growing prominence as a global hub for railway manufacturing. The company emphasized the achievement in a stock exchange filing, noting that the rollout demonstrates the capability of its Uttarpara manufacturing facility in West Bengal.
“These milestones reflect our unwavering commitment to advancing urban mobility in India and showcase our growing manufacturing capabilities and innovation in the railway sector,” the company stated.
Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal participated virtually, celebrating the event. “With the inauguration of Bengaluru Metro’s new trainset and India surpassing 1,000 km of operational metro rail, we mark a significant step forward in urban mobility. Bengaluru, a global IT hub, continues to tackle urban challenges with enhanced metro connectivity, benefiting millions. India now ranks third globally in metro rail, and we aim to surpass the United States within five years,” Lal said.
Umesh Chowdhary, Managing Director of Titagarh Rail Systems, called the delivery a significant milestone for the company. “This achievement is a testament to our commitment to excellence and innovation and showcases the local engineering and expertise we have built,” he said.
The trainset, designed for driverless operation, is the first stainless steel Metro train produced by Titagarh and the first fully Made-in-India train for Bengaluru Metro’s Yellow Line. The company plans to deliver two more trainsets by April 2025, ramping up production to two trainsets per month by September 2025.
