Thiruvananthapuram Road Renovation Delayed as ₹7.5 Crore Bid Awaits Approval.

The long-awaited renovation of the Muttathara-Valiyathura Road, a vital route connecting Kallumoodu to the domestic airport terminal, is facing additional delays as the state government has yet to approve the tender proposal. The Public Works Department (PWD) Roads Division has issued five calls for tenders, with the most recent bid, 17% above the initial project estimate, awaiting the state cabinet's approval.

The deteriorating condition of the road has frustrated local commuters and residents. The route, heavily used by passengers traveling from Tamil Nadu to the airport, has been plagued with potholes for over a year, making the commute increasingly hazardous. "It's really unsafe, especially during the monsoon. Potholes are everywhere, and avoiding them risks damaging our vehicles," said Subin Raj S, a frequent commuter.

Radhakrishnan P, another regular driver, expressed concern over safety, describing the route as a "nightmare" due to the potholes. "I’ve had several close calls, swerving to avoid the potholes, especially at night when visibility is poor," he said. "The delay in fixing this road is not only wasting our time but also putting our safety at risk."

PWD Chief Engineer Ajith Ramachandran explained that the delay is due to pending approval from the finance department. "The decision is awaiting the cabinet's approval and the necessary funds from the finance department. We hope it will be reviewed in the upcoming cabinet meeting. Once approved, work will begin immediately," he told TOI.

Typically, bids exceeding 10% of the estimated project cost are rejected, but due to the urgency of the repairs, the PWD has recommended approval of the ₹7.5 crore bid from Sree Dhanya Constructions, despite the 17% overage.

The project, funded by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, has faced repeated setbacks due to budgetary constraints. However, PWD Minister PA Mohammed Riyas has expressed his commitment to completing the much-needed repairs.
