THDC India Enters Thermal Energy Sector, Commissions 660-MW Unit at Khurja Plant.
THDC India Ltd (THDCIL) has commenced commercial operations of a 660-MW unit at its Khurja Super Thermal Power Plant in Uttar Pradesh, marking its entry into the domestic thermal energy sector, Chairman and Managing Director R.K. Vishnoi announced.
Until now, THDCIL’s portfolio included 1,424 MW from hydro, 113 MW from wind, and 50 MW from solar energy. The Khurja project, with a total capacity of 1,320 MW (2×660 MW), is being developed in Bulandshahr district with an investment of ₹13,000 crore.
“We have achieved a monumental milestone in our commitment to strengthening India’s power generation capacity. Unit 1 (660 MW) began commercial operations at midnight on January 25, 2025,” Vishnoi stated. The second unit is set to be operational soon.
Key Features of the Khurja Thermal Project
- Integrated coal-based power plant linked to the Amelia coal mine in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh
- Advanced Flue Gas De-sulphurization (FGD) technology to reduce emissions and improve air quality
- Annual generation capacity of 9,264 million units (MUs) at an 85% plant load factor
- Power allocation:
- 64.7% (854 MW) to Uttar Pradesh
- 21.3% to Rajasthan
- 3.9% to Uttarakhand
- 10.1% to other regions
The foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 9, 2019. Spread over 1,200 acres, the project will be connected to the national grid, strengthening India’s power supply.
THDC India, headquartered in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, is a joint venture between NTPC (75%) and the Uttar Pradesh government (25%).
