Telangana's Rail Network Set for ₹80,000 Crore Boost, 40 Amrit Stations Undergoing Modernization.
Telangana is poised for a significant upgrade in its railway infrastructure, with the Centre planning to invest a massive ₹80,000 crore in the sector in the coming days, Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, announced recently.
Speaking at the virtual inauguration of the modernized Begumpet, Warangal, and Karimnagar railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station scheme—led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi—Kishan Reddy highlighted that ongoing railway projects in the state already amount to approximately ₹42,000 crore.
"Telangana is witnessing a shift in railway infrastructure with a 20-fold increase in the railway budget, the sanctioning of 40 Amrit stations, 100 percent rail electrification, and the laying of a record 346 km of new rail lines," he stated, emphasizing the Centre's special attention to the state's railway development.
Modernized Stations and Future Plans
The newly redeveloped stations are designed to serve passenger needs for the next 30-40 years. Reddy confirmed that the Secunderabad railway station is undergoing redevelopment with a ₹720 crore investment, and work has also commenced on the Nampally and Kacheguda stations. "All redeveloped stations will be ready by next year. Komuravelli Railway Station will be operational by Dasara," he added. The minister also pointed out that the Centre had advanced local transportation by initiating MMTS Phase-2, even without state government support.
During the inauguration and foundation-laying ceremony for various development projects worth ₹26,000 crore in Bikaner, Rajasthan, Prime Minister Modi underscored Telangana's historical significance in railway infrastructure. "Begumpet railway station is inspired by the architecture of the Kakatiya empire," Modi noted, adding that Amrit Bharat Stations aim to not only preserve India's heritage but also boost tourism across states.
Modi further highlighted that over 1,300 railway stations nationwide are undergoing modernization to enhance the passenger experience. Among these, 103 stations across 86 districts—developed at a cost of ₹1,100 crore—were inaugurated on Thursday.
Meanwhile, state R&B minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy urged the railways to expedite the MMTS Phase-II extension up to Yadadri to facilitate suburban commuters visiting the temple. South Central Railway (SCR) General Manager Arun Kumar Jain revealed that 119 stations have been identified for redevelopment across the SCR jurisdiction.
