Tata Power Moves to Expand Electricity Distribution Beyond Mumbai in Maharashtra.
Tata Power is making a significant move to expand its electricity distribution network across various key growth regions of Maharashtra, venturing beyond its established presence in the financial capital. Officials confirmed on Thursday that the company has filed an application with the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) for a license to serve new areas.
The ambitious plan includes key areas within Mumbai, Pune, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (formerly Aurangabad), and Nashik. This strategic expansion is a direct result of amendments to the Electricity Act, which now permit private distribution companies to apply for licenses to serve diverse regions. Previously, many companies were hesitant due to the substantial infrastructure investments required.
Tata Power's application specifically highlights interest in serving:
Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Badnapur, Jalna Taluka, Waluj MIDC
Nashik, Sinnar, Igatpuri, and Trimbak Talukas
Mumbai Metropolitan Region: Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC), and the entire corridor from PMC to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA)
Pune Region: Pune City, Haveli, Maval, Mulshi, and Khed Talukas
This move by Tata Power follows a similar initiative by its rival, Adani Group, which applied for select areas in 2022 and expressed an intent to invest up to ₹5,700 crore towards its expansion efforts. Tata Power and Adani Group already compete in Mumbai's suburban electricity market.
As part of the mandatory regulatory procedure, a public notice has been issued to invite objections and suggestions from citizens. This will be followed by a public hearing. Sources familiar with the matter indicate that Torrent Power and Adani also have similar applications pending, with MERC expected to hold hearings for their proposals on July 22.
