Tamil Nadu sets new solar power generation record at 5,512 MW.

Tamil Nadu set a new record in solar power generation, producing 5,512 MW on Wednesday, surpassing the previous record of 5,398 MW achieved on March 5, 2024.

According to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), 39.2 million units (MU) of solar power were absorbed into the grid on the record-setting day.

The state’s renewable energy sector has seen remarkable achievements in both wind and solar power. Tamil Nadu achieved a record wind power generation of 5,838 MW on September 10, 2023, and has now reached a new high in solar power. Additionally, the state recorded its highest single-day solar energy generation of 40.50 MU on April 23, 2024.

In the 2023-24 fiscal year, Tamil Nadu harnessed 11,033 MU of solar energy from its installed solar power plants, as per a government document.

Tamil Nadu ranks fourth in India for installed solar capacity, with 8,145.53 MW (including rooftop and CTU connectivity).

As of June 30, 2024, Tamil Nadu’s total installed renewable power capacity stood at 22,754 MW,

comprising 10,789 MW of wind power, 8,617 MW of solar power (with 7,873 MW ground-mounted and 679 MW rooftop capacity), 969 MW of biomass, and 2,178 MW of large hydro power.
