Tamil Nadu Forest Department Plans Ecotourism in Rameswaram, Prepares TN Trekking Atlas
The Environment, Climate Change, and Forest Department of the Tamil Nadu government has announced a comprehensive array of initiatives aimed at promoting ecotourism and biodiversity conservation across the state. State Minister of Forest M Mathiventhan presented the Policy Note for 2024-25 in the Assembly, highlighting key projects including a new eco-tourism venture on Rameswaram Island.
The ecotourism project, valued at ₹15 crore, will be implemented through community-based organizations under the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve Trust in Ramanathapuram District. This initiative aims to leverage local involvement for sustainable tourism practices.
Another significant project involves establishing a native species seed vault with cryogenic facilities at the Tamil Nadu Forest Academy in Coimbatore, with an allocated budget of ₹10 crore. Additionally, the government plans to create a dark sky park at Kolli Hills in Namakkal, costing ₹1 crore, aimed at preserving natural darkness for stargazing enthusiasts.
In efforts to promote outdoor activities, the government will develop a Trekking Atlas featuring 40 routes across Tamil Nadu, with infrastructure improvements planned along these routes at a cost of ₹4 crore.
Several conservation projects were also outlined, including the establishment of a crocodile conservation centre at Anaikarai in the Kumbakonam range of Thanjavur Division (₹2.5 crore) and initiatives to protect sea turtles along coastal areas using the assistance of turtle guardians (₹1 crore).
Upgrades to orchidariums at Gudalur and Anaimalai Tiger Reserves, totaling ₹3 crore, were also announced. Furthermore, the State intends to introduce the Tamil Nadu Preservation of Trees (Government Lands) Act, 2024, alongside the Tamil Nadu State Forest Policy 2024.
As part of recognizing conservation efforts, the government will establish the Dr AJT Johnsingh Wildlife Conservation Award, which includes a citation and prize money of ₹25 lakh to encourage significant contributions in wildlife conservation.
These initiatives underscore Tamil Nadu's commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development, aiming to enhance biodiversity protection and promote responsible tourism practices across the state.
