"Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin is scheduled to commemorate the groundbreaking of a ₹800-crore multi-modal transport hub at Broadway on January 25."
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will lay the foundation stone for an ₹800-crore multi-modal transport hub integrated with Kuralagam on January 25, HR&CE Minister P.K. Sekarbabu announced on Sunday. The minister made the announcement after inspecting ongoing development works in the Kolathur, Harbour, and Villivakkam Assembly constituencies.
Sekarbabu said the 75-year-old Broadway bus stand will be redeveloped under the North Chennai Development Scheme into a modern multi-modal transport facility. The upgraded hub will feature 73 bus bays capable of handling around 466 bus movements per hour, providing significant benefits to north Chennai residents, especially daily wage workers and commuters.
To support operations during construction, temporary bus terminals will be set up at Royapuram and Island Grounds. The Royapuram facility will handle about 2,000 bus trips daily and serve nearly 40,000 passengers, while the Island Grounds terminal will share the load. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will construct these temporary terminals at costs of ₹7.47 crore and ₹7.77 crore, respectively. Funding for the ₹800-crore main project will come from the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), GCC, and other state departments.
Sekarbabu directed officials to ensure the new terminals are equipped with modern amenities, including seating, ramps for persons with disabilities, separate toilets, drinking water facilities, two-wheeler parking, breastfeeding rooms, paved roads, street lighting, and other public conveniences.
During his visit, the minister also inspected restoration work at Villivakkam Lake and the construction of a new community hall at SIDCO Nagar, being built at a cost of ₹6.75 crore. In Kolathur, he reviewed the progress of urban primary health centres and ward office buildings, with a combined investment of over ₹18 crore.
