Second Phase of Mumbai Metro-III to Begin Operations by May 2025: Maharashtra CM.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced recently that the second phase of the Mumbai Metro-III, connecting BKC to Colaba, will be operational by May 2025.
Speaking in the legislative council, Fadnavis emphasized the rapid progress of the Metro work in Maharashtra, highlighting that the Mumbai Metro-III project has now entered its final stage. He added, "The first phase of the Metro from Aarey to BKC has already been opened for passenger traffic, and the second phase, from BKC to Colaba, will serve as a vital lifeline for Mumbai, benefiting 17 lakh passengers daily."
Currently, around 6 lakh passengers are using the Metro, as connectivity remains incomplete. The project, once fully operational, is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and enhance connectivity in the city.
The first phase of the underground Metro 3, running between Aarey and BKC, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October. This 10-station stretch, part of the Aqua Line, includes nine underground stations and was completed at a cost of Rs 14,120 crore.
Metro 3, designed to connect Navy Nagar in the south to Aarey depot in the north-central part of the city, will eventually cater to around 12 lakh daily commuters. It will also provide links to other metro lines, monorail, suburban rail, inter-city rail, and the international airport, further strengthening Mumbai's public transportation network.
