Second Batch of 16 Metro Rail Coaches Unloaded at Kolkata Port
Late on Thursday night, a second batch of 16 Metro Rail coaches, each weighing 48 tons, was successfully discharged from Netaji Subhas Dock in Kolkata. These coaches are destined for the Eastern Railway.
The vessel MV Bosi 58, carrying the coaches, had arrived at Kolkata Dock on May 22, marking another milestone in the city's ongoing transportation developments.
This development comes in the wake of Kolkata's recent achievement in March, where India's first underwater metro line commenced public operations. Commuters eagerly queued up for the inaugural ride on the country's inaugural underwater train journey.
The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata's metropolitan transportation network, situated beneath the Hooghly River, spans a 520-meter-long under-river tunnel. Decorated with blue LED lights, this underwater metro tunnel marks a significant engineering feat.
The Kolkata underwater metro is scheduled to operate on weekdays, with trains running every 12 to 15 minutes in this underwater section, with the last service departing at 9.45 pm in both directions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Kolkata's metro operations on March 6, marking a momentous occasion for the city's transportation landscape. During the inaugural event, PM Modi also embarked on a metro ride with school students, engaging in conversations with them and the metro staff.
In addition to the underwater metro, PM Modi inaugurated the Kavi Subhash - Hemanta Mukhopadhyay Metro section and the Taratala - Majerhat Metro section, both integral parts of the Joka-Esplanade line. Notably, the latter section features the Majerhat Metro Station, an architectural marvel, showcasing innovative approaches to urban mobility by spanning railway lines, platforms, and a canal.
