Rs.107-crore project for development of Pathanamthitta town.

The government has sanctioned a Rs.107-crore town development project for Pathanamthitta as part of the Urban-2020 project, municipal chairman A. Sureshkumar has said.

Mr. Sureshkumar told The Hindu that the project was part of an Urban Development Department scheme to improve basic facilities in all municipalities. A workshop for municipal council members and staff was organised to discuss the project.

The project involved the construction of a comprehensive network of sewer lines, modernisation of the municipal market, and beautification of footpaths and 10 major junctions in the town. The State-owned KITCO had been entrusted with the task of preparing the detailed project report.

The sewer line network was estimated to cost Rs. 62 crore. Also, Rs. 25 crore and Rs. 20 crore had been earmarked for the market modernisation and beautification projects respectively.

Mr. Sureshkumar said construction of foot overbridges linking two roads would be part of the project. He said all buildings in the market would be renovated.
Sewage treatment plant

Modern sewage treatment plants, lighting of the streets by effectively utilising the biogas generated at these plants, renovation of drainages, drinking water supply, and so on would be included in the project. The civic body chief said the project report would be prepared in three months.

K. Sivadasan Nair, MLA, inaugurated the workshop and Mr. Sureshkumar presided.
