Rs. 35 crore for laying roads expected soon: Mayor.

Announcing that the Corporation of Madurai would soon lay roads at a cost of Rs. 35 crore and repair the stretches which had been damaged in the recent rains, Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa said recently that proposals had been sent to the State government and that funds were expected anytime.

Responding to a query from CPI (M) councillor Chellam, he said that corporation engineers had marked all bad roads in the 100 wards. Estimates had been prepared and when the administrative sanctions came in, the works would commence.

When many AIADMK councillors pointed out the problems in drinking water distribution, the Mayor said that the pipelines were laid for a population of eight lakh in 72 wards, but the population had now gone up to 20 lakh in 100 wards. “It is a major project for which we have to examine the funds required. A study was conducted by IIT-Madras in this regard, and a detailed project report is ready,” he added.

Not convinced, councillor Salaimuthu (AIADMK) said that when water level in Vaigai dam was quite comfortable – over 50 feet – officials should not find excuses for improper water supply. During shortage experienced a few months back, the corporation supplied water efficiently once in three days, he said.
