Road-widening work gives motorists a tough time in Delhi.

The ongoing work on the widening of the HUDA-DLF sector road at various stretches of the corridor is giving a harrowing time to commuters. The work is under way at the Cyber City, DLF Phase-II, Sikanderpur Kosi, and along Golf Course Road.

The road has been dug up and barricades put up at several points along the 10-km under-construction road. 'The construction leads to traffic jams during rush hours. Besides, traffic has been diverted at various points making it difficult for those coming to Gurgaon for the first time to find their way. It is a complete mess,' said Sandeep Hooda, a businessman, who travels through the stretch almost every day.

The Rs. 550-crore project covers a distance of 8.3 km on sector road and 2.2 km on NH-8.

The inordinate delay in completion of the flyover at Sikanderpur - the project has already missed two deadlines - has worsened the traffic situation in the area. During rush hours, motorists from the DLF Cyber City, Delhi, and Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road drive through the area to reach their destinations.

'During the days before Diwali, the traffic situation went from bad to worse. The police should at least install a traffic signal at the juncture for better traffic management till the construction is over,' said Naveen Rao, who runs a sanitary and hardware shop at the Sikanderpur market.

The traffic situation on Golf Course Road has also been worse for the past one year due to simultaneous construction for Rapid Metro Phase-II (from Sikanderpur to Sector 55-56) and the DLF-HUDA sector road.

Rajesh, a fruit vendor opposite the Mega Mall, said that the traffic situation had improved from what it was a year ago, but still jams were caused in the rush hours. Golf Course Road is heavily dug up and barricaded at several points. When contacted, the Rapid Metro Rail Gurgaon Limited spokesperson said that 35 per cent work was completed and it was expected to be completed by 2016.
