The Bairabi-Sairang railway line, poised to integrate Mizoram into the national railway network, is projected to be completed by July next year, officials announced on Friday. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) reported that approximately 93 percent of the 51.38-kilometer line is already finished, as detailed during a review meeting with Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati.
The railway line will feature four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang. Officials informed that the segment up to Hortoki is set to commence operations in the coming days. A successful trial run has been completed on the Bairabi-Hortoki section, and services to Mualkhang are expected to begin in the next few months.
The entire line up to Sairang, located near the state capital Aizawl, is slated for completion by July 2025. This project is anticipated to significantly boost Mizoram's economy and enhance its tourism sector.
Governor Kambhampati noted that once operational, the railway line will reduce travel time from Assam to Mizoram and lower transportation costs. The project, which began construction in 2015 and was sanctioned in 2008-09, has an estimated cost of ₹8,213.72 crore, according to revised estimates.
The railway line will include 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and 32 tunnels, highlighting its complex and ambitious scope.
