PWD to repair Nizamuddin bridge soon
The Public Works Department (PWD) is expected to take up repairs at the Nizamuddin Bridge later this year. Engineers with the civic agency recently inspected the bridge and found some of the bearings on the lower side of the structure to be corroded and damaged.
However, to ensure that traffic is not thrown out of gear, the PWD will undertake repairs in phases.
'We don’t have to repair the road or the surface of the bridge. It only needs to be strengthened,' said a PWD official.
Explaining the process, the officials said that the project was in its initial stages with tenders yet to be floated. After the tenders, the contractor will have to order the bearings, following which they will be manufactured. 'It will take at least three months for work to start,' he added.
After replacing and strengthening the lower side of the bridge, the engineers will have to lift the deck for two days. 'Of the two carriageways, only one will be shut at a time and that too for a day. Traffic movement will not be stopped. Most of the repair work takes place during the night. During peak traffic hours, we will try not to carry out the work,' said an engineer. He added that the bridge will be repaired on the same lines as the ITO bridge, where repairs were carried out mostly after midnight.
