Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Z-Morh tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh. The 6.5-km, two-lane tunnel, located on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, will drastically reduce travel time and improve access to the region.
At an altitude of 8,652 feet, the Z-Morh tunnel connects Gagangir and Sonmarg, a popular tourist spot, bypassing avalanche-prone stretches of the highway. The tunnel will cut down travel time from over two hours to just 15 minutes, offering safer, quicker access.
The project, initiated in 2015 under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), was completed last year at a cost of Rs 2,400 crore. The Z-Morh tunnel is part of a larger initiative aimed at improving connectivity in the Himalayan region, and it works in tandem with the under-construction 14-km Zoji La tunnel. When completed by 2028, the Zoji La tunnel will eliminate the hazardous Zoji La Pass, offering a safer route to Ladakh.
The tunnels are expected to enhance India’s defense infrastructure, ensuring year-round access for troop movement and logistics in the Kargil and Ladakh sectors. Additionally, the improved connectivity will boost tourism, facilitate trade, and improve access to healthcare and education.
Tourism is expected to benefit greatly, particularly in Sonmarg, which is poised to become a year-round destination for tourists. The development plans include transforming Sonmarg into a premier skiing and winter sports hub. This uninterrupted connectivity will also enable locals to stay year-round, contributing to the local economy and generating employment.
Ahead of the inauguration, heightened security measures have been put in place. The Special Protection Group (SPG), along with Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Army, and paramilitary forces, has established a 20-km security zone around the venue. Additional safety measures such as drone surveillance and random frisking are in effect to ensure a smooth event.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited Sonmarg to oversee preparations for the event, highlighting that the Z-Morh tunnel will unlock year-round tourism and create long-term economic benefits for the region.
The Z-Morh tunnel is part of the broader infrastructure development efforts to improve access to Ladakh. Ongoing projects, including tunnels at Baralacha La, Tangang La, and Lachung La on the Manali-Leh axis, are integral to the India-China Border Roads initiative, designed to strengthen strategic infrastructure in sensitive areas.
