PM Modi Launches City Gas Project in Bengal's Alipurduar, Cooch Behar.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently laid the foundation stone for a significant City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in West Bengal's Alipurduar district, marking a major stride towards providing clean and affordable energy to the region.
The project, with an estimated value of ₹1,010 crore, is set to bring piped natural gas (PNG) connections to over 2.5 lakh households across Alipurduar and the neighboring Cooch Behar districts. Beyond residential supply, the initiative also includes provisions for commercial and industrial users. A crucial component of the project is the establishment of approximately 19 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations, aligning with the government's minimum work programme targets.
Speaking at a public gathering, Prime Minister Modi underscored the broader vision behind the CGD initiative. "This is not just a pipeline project. It is also an example of the government's doorstep delivery of schemes. Through this initiative, we will supply clean and more affordable energy to households via a pipeline," he stated.
The Prime Minister framed the project within the national aspiration of becoming a 'Viksit Rashtra' (developed nation). "Today, when India is moving towards becoming a 'Viksit Rashtra', Bengal's participation in this process is both expected and essential. With this intention, the central government is continuously giving new impetus to infrastructure, innovation and investment here," he added.
The CGD project is anticipated to ensure a reliable fuel supply and generate substantial employment opportunities within the region, further boosting its economic development. This initiative highlights the Centre's commitment to strengthening West Bengal's clean energy infrastructure and contributing to a more sustainable future.
