NTPC Launches Bid Process for Thermal Power Projects to Strengthen Grid Reliability.

State-run NTPC has invited bids for the supply of electricity from thermal power plants with capacities ranging between 150 MW and 250 MW, as the company seeks to strengthen grid-balancing capabilities amid the rapid growth of renewable energy generation.

The move comes as India accelerates the addition of renewable energy capacity, increasing the need for flexible power sources that can respond quickly to fluctuations in electricity supply and demand.

“India’s rapid expansion of renewable capacity is transforming the power sector and advancing the country’s clean energy ambitions. However, the growing share of renewable generation is also increasing the need for flexible power sources that can quickly respond to changing grid conditions,” NTPC said in its bid document.

The country’s largest power producer noted that thermal power plants continue to play a crucial role in maintaining grid stability, particularly given the limited availability of hydropower, gas-based generation and large-scale energy storage systems.

As renewable energy penetration rises, thermal generation is increasingly being relied upon to provide balancing support and ensure reliable power supply during periods of variability in solar and wind output.
