Mumbai's Metro Lines 2A and 7, which run from Gundavli to Dahisar and Andheri West, recently achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 250,000 daily riders for the first time since the inauguration of the route. Phase 1 of these metro lines commenced operations on April 2, 2022, and Phase 2 was officially flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 19, 2023, marking the establishment of Mumbai's first integrated metro network.
Before this achievement, the average daily ridership stood at 2.37 lakh passengers. The notable increase in ridership can be attributed to the block taken on the Western Railway (WR) since October 27, which resulted in the cancellation of numerous services for the commissioning of the 6th line between Khar and Goregaon. This disruption led to delays and overcrowding on WR, prompting many commuters to opt for Metro Lines 2A and 7, serving the western suburbs.
An official from Maha Mumbai Metro Corporation Ltd (MMMoCL) reported, "We already breached the cumulative ridership mark of 5 crore since its commissioning in September this year."
In addition to the impressive ridership numbers, the adoption of the Mumbai One Card has seen strong uptake, with 1,49,556 people choosing this convenient payment method, representing approximately 40% of daily passengers.
MMMoCL highlighted that this route is witnessing a monthly growth rate of 5%. Andheri West serves as the terminal station of Line 2A, running along Link Road and catering to middle-class and higher-middle-class localities, as well as providing connectivity to malls in Malad and Andheri.
Gundavli station acts as the terminal station for Line 7, offering an interchange facility with the Western Express Highway station of Metro 1, along with connecting Andheri and Ghatkopar railway stations.
