Monorail gets safety nod.

Mumbaikars will soon be able to travel by the country's first monorail as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MM-RDA) got a safety clearance certificate for Phase I (Chembur-Wadala). The safety certification authority, who is retired commissioner of railway safety G P Garg, handed over the clearance documents to MM-RDA.

MMRDA additional metropolitan commissioner Ashwini Bhide told TOI, 'We will approach the state government, after which the date for commercial operations will be finalized.' MMRDA hopes to begin services by January-end or early February.

The 20-km monorail corridor is between Chembur and Jacob Circle. Phase I comprises of a 8.8-km Chembur-Wadala stretch which will have seven stations, including Wadala Depot, Bhakti Park, Mysore Colony, Bharat Petroleum, Fertilizer Township, VNP/R C Marg and Chembur.
