Mizoram’s Former Governor General Calls for Expedited National Highway Widening.

Former Mizoram Governor (Retd.) General Vijay Kumar Singh has urged National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) to expedite the widening of NH-306, the state’s key highway linking Assam, citing delays impacting the public, official sources said.

Singh, who visited Kolasib district on Saturday as part of a state tour, expressed concern over the slow progress of road repairs, particularly in Kolasib, which had faced severe monsoon damage last year, triggering truckers' protests.

He noted that several compensation and forest clearance issues had been resolved and emphasized that the state’s working season is short, making it crucial for NHIDCL to speed up construction.

NH-306, including the Aizawl-Kawnpui sector (NH-6), serves as Mizoram’s primary link to Silchar, Assam.

During the meeting, Singh also raised concerns about rising drug abuse among youth, calling for stronger efforts to combat the menace. He praised law enforcement agencies for their actions against drug trafficking and stressed the importance of effectively implementing central welfare schemes.

On agriculture and local production, Singh highlighted the need for better marketing and distribution strategies. He also called for long-term policies to address ‘jhum’ (slash-and-burn) cultivation, urging experts to assist farmers in adopting sustainable practices.
