Maharashtra inks 25,400 MW nuclear agreements in major clean energy push.
Maharashtra recently signed memorandums of understanding with Reliance Industries Limited, Adani Power, NTPC Limited and Bajaj Group-backed Lalitpur Power Generation Company to attract investments worth ₹6.5 lakh crore in the nuclear energy sector.
The agreements outline plans to develop 25,400 MW of nuclear power capacity, nearly three times India’s current operational atomic power fleet of around 8,800 MW. If implemented, the projects would surpass the Centre’s target of achieving 22,000 MW of nuclear capacity by 2031-32.
India has spent more than five decades building a nuclear fleet of about 8,780-8,880 MW across 24-25 operating reactors. The proposed projects in Maharashtra would significantly expand the country’s nuclear generation base and mark one of the largest clean energy investment initiatives in the sector.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who presided over the signing ceremony at Mantralaya, said the investments would support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India an energy-rich nation while advancing the country’s zero-carbon goals.
