Madhya Kailash Flyover Completion Delayed to January 2026, Misses October Deadline.
The Madhya Kailash flyover project has been delayed again as the state highways department is yet to place the final deck at the junction. Highways Minister E.V. Velu had earlier announced that the flyover would open by the end of October, but the project, which began in 2022, is now expected to be completed by January 2026.
The delay is attributed to the contractor’s hold-up in procuring steel from Tirupati for the final works. As a result, the department has yet to place a 22-metre-long deck connecting Sardar Patel Road with OMR, and the approach road on Sardar Patel Road remains incomplete, with only supporting reinforcements installed so far.
The flyover, stretching 650 metres and costing ₹60 crore, is being constructed to ease traffic at Madhya Kailash junction, which sees 11,000 commuters per hour, with the highest flow of 3,762 commuters per hour from Guindy to OMR.
Highways Assistant Engineer Vignesh said intermittent rains in November slowed construction. “Approach work is progressing fast, and we have installed supporting structures at the junction. We just have to place the deck,” he added.
To manage traffic in the meantime, vehicles from Adyar are now permitted to travel directly to Guindy via Sardar Patel Road, instead of taking the earlier U-turn through OMR. On the OMR stretch outside Kasturba Nagar MRTS, an 8-metre stretch has been occupied to place the final girder, temporarily narrowing the road towards Tidel Park.
The traffic diversion permit is valid for one month, with Vignesh expressing hope that the road will be cleared by December 15 after placing the final deck.
Local residents have voiced concerns over the delay. D. Balaji, vice-president of the Adyar Kasturba Nagar Residents Welfare Association, said, “Sardar Patel Road gets piled up with vehicles from Malar Hospital and the Theosophical Society. Even on the Guindy side, two-wheelers parked by tea stalls block the road. The project must be executed fast.”
