KPTCL plans to upgrade transmission capacity in Bengaluru's tech corridor.

With an aim to improve the voltage profile and reliability of electricity supply in the software hub of Sarjapura and the industrial suburbs of Dommasandra, Kachamaranahalli and Chandapura, transmission utility KPTCL has planned a 26-km long, back-to-back, double-circuit transmission network between the Export Promotion Industrial Park (EPIP) and Yerandanahalli in the existing narrow corridor.

The proposed project is expected to slow down the exit of large industries from the state grid which has become a major cause of concern for distribution utility, Bescom.

In the narrow corridor that connects EPIP and Yerandanahalli 220 kv stations, there is a 66 kv line running through four smaller sub-stations. This single circuit line is capable of transporting up to 38 MW of power. Once the line is upgraded, the corridor will be capable of carrying 180 MW , representing a sixfold increase in capacity. The region is also one of the highest revenue grossers for Bescom.

The KPTCL is planning to adopt the Swedish technology of covered conductors, which it used in Yelahanka, on this corridor too. 'We want to use the same covered conductor technology wherever we have serious right of way issues. We are trying to fix gaps in transmission and distribution network that have not been upgraded in the past 10-15 years,' energy minister DK Shivakumar told ET.
