Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has submitted a new proposal to the state transport department for the construction of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro, extending from Kazhakkoottam Junction to Putharikandam ground. The proposed line spans 14.9 kilometers, with costs to be determined once the government finalizes the alignment.
This revised plan comes after the previous intention to launch the service at Technocity in Pallippuram was scrapped due to government directives aimed at exploring a new alignment. The decision was influenced by concerns that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) would not approve road excavation for Metro pillars during the ‘defect liability’ period.
KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera stated, “We submitted a technical report incorporating the recommendations of various stakeholders. A Metro starting at Kazhakkoottam Junction will have many advantages and allow for quicker work initiation, minimizing procedural delays. We may consider Pallippuram at a later stage and have several alternatives that we cannot disclose until the government makes a final decision.”
The current focus is on establishing the alignment before submitting a final report to the government and inviting tenders. As construction of the national highway is expected to be completed by the time the Metro project begins, any initial plans for Pallippuram would require excavation in the middle of the road.
Transport department sources noted that the elevated highway at Kazhakkoottam would necessitate taller Metro pillars, thus raising project costs.
The new alignment is designed to connect key locations, including Technopark, Kariavattom university campus, Ulloor, Murinjapalam, Pattom, PMG, the legislative assembly, Palayam, Bakery Junction, Thampanoor, and Putharikandam ground. KMRL also proposed three additional alignments to incorporate LuLu Mall and other significant sites.
Furthermore, the proposal indicates that the Metro may be extended to Pallippuram in Technocity in phase II, with additional extensions to Kudappanakunnu and Neyyattinkara also being considered.
According to the earlier detailed project report submitted by the Kerala Rapid Transit Corp Ltd (KRTL), phase I of the Light Metro project, extending 21.8 kilometers from Pallippuram to Karamana, was projected to cost approximately ₹4,673 crores. KRTL, formed in 2021 for project implementation, was dissolved by the state government in 2022 due to objections from the Centre.
