Karnataka plans underground water table rejuvenation project for Kolar.

The Kolar district in-charge minister, UT Khader, hopes that the project to recharge the underground water table in tanks and lakes in Kolar will be completed in a year after the start of the work.

Khader, who is also the Karnataka Health Minister, told this to presspersons on the sidelines of a programme to distribute free digital hearing aids to identified beneficiaries in Mangaluru recently.

He said that the Karnataka Cabinet has cleared a ₹1,200-crore Koramangala-Challaghatta Valley project to rejuvenate underground water table in 126 lakes and tanks in Kolar district with the treated water from Bengaluru.

Stating that the work on the project will begin by December, he said tenders for it will be called soon. The Koramangala-Challaghatta Valley project is likely to be completed within a year, he said.

The project involves the laying of 36 km of pipeline. He said around 4.8 tmc ft of water will be available for recharging underground water table in 126 tanks and lakes in Kolar district.

To a query if the de-silting of tanks and lakes is included in the ₹1,200-crore project, a separate proposal will be made for de-silting of lakes and ponds.

Of the ₹1,200 crore, around ₹1,072 crore will be used for the project work and the rest for its maintenance, he said.
