Japanese Shipping Giant MOL Explores Indian Shipbuilding, Engages Cochin Shipyard.
Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), one of the world’s largest shipping companies, is considering India as a new hub for building its fleet, seeking to diversify its supply chain away from its traditional reliance on China and South Korea.
The Japanese giant has initiated talks with several Indian shipyards, including Cochin Shipyard Ltd., as it explores the possibility of sourcing vessels from the subcontinent. The move is part of a broader strategy to expand its network and reduce its dependence on existing suppliers.
Initially, MOL plans to source medium-range carriers from India. If the partnership proves successful and the local shipbuilding ecosystem develops further, the company is expected to scale up its orders to include more specialized vessels. This shift could represent a significant boost for India's shipbuilding industry, attracting more foreign investment and technology.
This strategic pivot by MOL could signal a new chapter for the Indian maritime sector, positioning it as a key player in the global shipbuilding landscape.
