Indian Government Approves ₹309 Crore for Kavach System in National Capital Region.
In a significant move to enhance rail safety, the central government has approved a ₹309.26 crore outlay for the installation of the indigenous 'Kavach' automatic train protection system. This project will cover 790 km across the North Central Railway (NCR) zone.
This initiative is part of a broader national project, 'Kavach and Communication Backbone through LTE for Balance Routes of Indian Railways,' which was included in the 2024–25 Works, Machinery & Rolling Stock Programme. The overall project has an outlay of ₹27,693 crore.
The ₹309.26 crore will be used for Kavach deployment across the Prayagraj, Agra, and Jhansi Divisions. Key routes to be covered include:
Shikohabad-Farrukhabad (103.58 km)
Dholpur-Sarmathura (70 km)
Lalitpur-Khajuraho (164 km)
Birlanagar-Udimod (102 km)
Etawah-Mainpuri (54 km)
Kavach is an automatic train protection (ATP) system designed to prevent accidents by avoiding signal passing at danger (SPAD). It regulates train speed and enables automatic braking in emergencies.
Indian Railways aims to roll out Kavach 4.0 across all major routes within the next six years. To support this effort, over 30,000 railway personnel have already been trained, and annual safety investments now exceed ₹1 lakh crore.
