Haryana Set to Receive Waste-to-Charcoal Plants
In a recent development, Haryana is set to establish waste-to-charcoal plants, also known as green coal plants, as announced in an official statement on Sunday. An MoU is expected to be signed between NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVNL) and the Haryana Government to initiate this transformative project.
Initially planned for Gurugram-Manesar and Faridabad, the initiative aims to extend across other cities in Haryana. NVVNL officials are slated to visit potential sites soon to set up these green coal plants.
"Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Union Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Minister, Manohar Lal Khattar, Haryana will soon benefit from waste-to-charcoal plants, also referred to as green coal plants," the statement affirmed. A meeting convened on Friday at New Delhi's Shram Shakti Bhawan, chaired by Khattar, emphasized the state's commitment to leveraging municipal solid waste for renewable energy production.
"The minister is resolute in addressing the mounting challenges posed by increasing municipal solid waste and harnessing it effectively for sustainable energy generation," the statement highlighted. Discussions during the meeting underscored NVVNL's initiative to produce green coal from solid waste, positioning it as a viable substitute for conventional coal in thermal power plants.
NVVNL has already launched a green coal production facility in Varanasi, designed to process 600 tonnes of waste into 200 tonnes of green coal per day, leaving minimal residue. The organization is also progressing with plans to establish similar facilities in Haldwani, Vadodara, Noida, Gorakhpur, and Bhopal.
During the deliberations, Khattar directed the swift implementation of green coal projects across various districts in Haryana. Dr. Narhari Singh Bangar, Commissioner of Municipal Corporation Gurugram, highlighted ongoing efforts by MCG to facilitate the establishment of these plants, having already identified potential sites in Gurugram in collaboration with NVVNL officials.
