Four-Laning of Trichy-Karaikudi Highway Back on Track, Elevated Corridors in the Works

The long-pending four-laning project on the Trichy-Karaikudi National Highway has been revived, with authorities moving ahead with plans to upgrade the key corridor and construct two elevated stretches to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity.

The project aims to widen the existing highway to four lanes, enhancing road capacity and reducing travel time between Tiruchirappalli and Karaikudi. The proposed upgrade is expected to facilitate smoother movement of passenger and commercial vehicles along the route, which serves as an important transport link in Tamil Nadu.

As part of the revised plan, two elevated corridors will be built at key congestion points to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow and improve road safety. The elevated sections are expected to help decongest urban stretches and minimise delays caused by intersections and local traffic.

The revival of the project comes after a prolonged delay and is expected to provide a major boost to regional connectivity, trade and economic activity in the districts along the highway corridor.

Officials said the upgraded highway infrastructure will improve access to industrial, commercial and tourism destinations while supporting the state's broader efforts to modernise its road network.
