Ford to Establish First Overseas Powertrain Facility at Maraimalainagar Plant.

US auto major Ford Motor Company is set to revive its idle Maraimalainagar factory near Chennai by establishing its first powertrain manufacturing facility outside the United States, with an investment of ₹3,250 crore.

Martin Everitt, Global Director, Powertrain Manufacturing Engineering, Ford Motor Company, told businessline on Friday at the Tamil Nadu State Secretariat that the new unit will be 100 per cent export-oriented, catering to Ford’s global manufacturing network.

The Maraimalainagar plant, which halted vehicle production in 2021, will now be repurposed to produce advanced powertrains. “I have got a team of engineers set aside ready to start. So, on Monday morning, we’ll start working on the industrialisation of this engine,” Everitt said after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to revive the facility.

The move marks a significant step in Ford’s renewed engagement with India’s manufacturing sector, positioning the Maraimalainagar site as a key contributor to the company’s global supply chain.
