As the calendar flips to January 2024, India anticipates the inauguration of five groundbreaking infrastructure projects poised to revolutionize the urban landscape, particularly in the Delhi-National Capital Region and Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Here's an overview of these transformative ventures and their expected opening dates.
Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL): Scheduled for inauguration on January 12, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link stands as a remarkable engineering marvel, spanning nearly 22 km. This sea bridge will connect Mumbai city with mainland Navi Mumbai, starting from Sewri in South Mumbai and terminating at Chirle near Nhava Sheva. Categorized as a Regional Development Project, it is implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority with an estimated cost of Rs. 18,000 crore. The MTHL is expected to boost economic development in Navi Mumbai and parts of Raigad District while enhancing connectivity with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.
Navi Mumbai International Airport: Operated by Adani Airports Holdings Ltd, the Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to address the escalating capacity needs of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Phase 1, anticipated to conclude by the end of 2024, will enable the handling of 20 million passengers annually. Managed by Adani Airport Holdings, the airport's total capacity is projected to reach 60 million passengers per annum and 800,000 tons per annum of cargo handling capacity, with an estimated cost of about Rs. 17,000 crore.
Noida International Airport: Expected to be operational in the Oct-Dec quarter of 2024, Noida International Airport will initially serve 12-16 million passengers per annum in Phase 1, eventually reaching a capacity of 70 million passengers by the end of Phase 4. Operated by Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, the airport is designed for efficient operations, incorporating Swiss efficiency and Indian hospitality. The master plan includes two runways, two terminals, cargo handling capacity, real estate development, and more. Zurich Airport International plans to invest over Rs. 10,000 crores in the first phase, managing the airport for a concession period of 40 years.
Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line): The 33.5-KM Aqua Line 3 of Mumbai's Metro Network, completely underground, is set to connect key financial hubs like Nariman Point, Bandra-Kurla-Complex, Fort, Worli, Lower Parel, and Goregaon. Expected to be fully operational in 2024, with Phase 1 likely functioning by April, the project by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) is estimated to cost about Rs. 33,000 crore. The Aqua Line 3 aims to serve over 16 lakh commuters daily, reducing travel time and linking with the city's suburban railway, Monorail, and Metro-1.
Mumbai Coastal Road Project: Envisioned by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Mumbai Coastal Road Project aims to decongest existing roads by providing an alternate North-South Trunk route. Phase 1, spanning 9.98 km from Princess Street Flyover at Marine Lines to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, is expected to be completed in the first half of 2024, with an estimated cost of about Rs. 13,000 crore. This project involves challenging engineering work, including land reclamation, tunnel construction, bridges, flyovers, and interchanges, complementing the underground Aqua Line 3 of Mumbai Metro.
