Finally, Road Renovation Work to Take Off.

The city corporation’s decision to black top roads across the city limits at a cost of Rs. 60 crore is caught in a limbo. Though the civic body, in its urgent council meeting held on recent morning, accepted the tender (price rate) presented by contractors to carry out road laying works, the southwest monsoon is likely to dampen the works.

Officials of the Agro-climate Research Centre at the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University has predicted that the southwest monsoon will hit the city most likely by the first week of June.

The civic body will on priority take up road laying works in places extensively damaged in the process of laying underground pipelines as part of the Under Ground Drainage (UGD) project, and laying of drinking water pipelines.

The civic body has received tender on May 4 to carry out road renovation work in the wards. Work would be taken up in 20 segments covering the north, east, central, south and western zones of the city limits.

Of the Rs 2,379 crore allotted by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, the civic body has sought Rs. 60 crore from the Commissioner of Municipal Administration (CMA). In this regard, the civic body in its council meeting held on December 12, 2014 has sought the CMA’s help for release of funds.

The announcement comes as a relief to residents and motorists here, as they were all along experiencing a lot of hardship due to potholed, muddy roads.
